Everyone deserves access to quality healthcare. Through Healthy Athletes®, Special Olympics Maine provides free health screenings, education, and referrals that help athletes identify health concerns, build healthy habits, and perform their best—both on and off the field of play.
Healthy Athletes® also helps healthcare professionals better understand the unique needs of people with intellectual disabilities, creating more inclusive healthcare throughout Maine.

Why Healthy Athletes Matters
People with intellectual disabilities often face significant barriers to quality healthcare and are more likely to experience preventable health conditions.
Research from Special Olympics has found that among participating athletes:
- 29% failed hearing screenings.
- 35% had untreated vision problems.
- 37% had untreated tooth decay.
- 50% had one or more foot conditions.
- Many athletes also experience lower bone density and other health concerns that often go undiagnosed.
By identifying health concerns early and connecting athletes with appropriate care, Healthy Athletes® helps improve health, independence, and quality of life.
Free Health Screenings
Healthy Athletes® offers free screenings in a welcoming, athlete-centered environment designed to reduce anxiety and make healthcare more accessible.
Special Olympics Maine currently offers screenings in:
Health Promotion – Nutrition, hydration, healthy lifestyle, and wellness education.lth, independence, and quality of life.
Healthy Hearing – Hearing screenings and follow-up recommendations.
Special Smiles – Oral health screenings and education.
FUNfitness – Flexibility, balance, strength, and functional movement assessments.
